History of Trinidad The historical backdrop of Trinidad started far before Columbus arrived on the island. Before any Spanish lived on the island, it was possessed by two indigenous clans. The Arawaks lived in the southern district of the island. The Caribs, who were viewed as a significantly more savage and horrendous than the Arawaks, lived in the north. The Caribs are depicted as â€Å"warlike† individuals and consequently they had the option to withstand a greater amount of chance battling the Spanish vanquishers, however insufficient. The written history of the island starts with Columbus' arrival in July 31, 1498. The island was fittingly named Trinidad after the Holy Trinity. Spain indicated little enthusiasm for the new region until around 1530 when Antonio Sedeno was named Captain-General of the island forever. This strategic not last the same number of suspected, Sedeno returned back to Spain inside four years after not having the option to tame and acculturate the locals. Donimgo de Vera in St. Joseph built up the principal lasting settlement in 1592 in St. Joseph. Throughout the following two centuries more endeavors at colonization were made however with little achievement. This all finished in 1699 with the Arena Massacre, in which the locals slaughtered the Spanish representative and everything except one of his men and the entirety of the clerics.
